What is Yin Yoga?

Yin & Yang...

Yin & Yang are concepts from the ancient Chinese taoist tradition that describes all levels of manifest existence. Yin is the unmoving, hidden aspects, whereas Yang is the changing, moving, revealing aspect. These two qualities always coexist.

Yin Yoga targets yin tissues, which are the deeper, denser, and more static structures. whereas yang yoga styles address yang tissues, which are the more superficial, elastic and flexible structrues.

Yin yoga works with connective tissues, ligaments, bones and joints. Yang (Hatha) yoga focuses mainly on muscles. Muscles (yang tissues) need to be rhythmically and repetitively moved as they are elastic. static holds are brief. Yin tissues being more plastic, require gentle but long held pressure.

Yang exercises include running, cycling, swimming, dancing and many of the popular yoga such as Hatha, Ashtanga, Vinyassa...Sometimes joints can create a feeling of discomfort in the body even though the muscular structures and strength of the body are perfectly healthy.

Lack of stretching makes the connective tissues shorten and shrink, which leads to loss of spaciousness in the body, releasing deep fascia tissue and strengthening the bones, which we can find weaken as we get older. Therefore, yang movement needs to be complemented by yin movement. Long held stretching of connective tissues and joints (more yin) is required to couples yang forms of yoga and yang form s of muscular exercise.

Yin yoga is holding the posture in stillness, meditative, mindful way to go deeper within whilst releasing tension in the fascia tissue, strengthen bones and work with the meridian lines connected to the myofascial lines and the organ energy system connecting to the 5 element theory in nature...Fire Earth, Metal, Water, Wood...to create balance in the energy chi/prana system in the body.

Try Yin Yoga to balance the 5 bodies, mind, emotion, physical, energetically and spiritually...

Yin is especially healing for pain in the body working on deep inner fascia tissues and bones, good for arthritis and fibromyalgia, MS, Hormonal changes, menopause and other in-balances in the body.
